  • What year will the proposed Northwest Georgia Charter Academy open?
    Fall 2026
  • What is Expeditionary Learning?
  • What grades will be served?
We plan to open with K-5 in Year 1 (fall 2026-spring 2027) and add grades 6, 7 and 8 as soon as possible. Our ability to add these grades (and eventually high school grades) will depend on several factors, including our students’ performance on standardized tests (compared to the districts in the attendance zone).
  • Where will the academy be located?
The committee is exploring several options, but it is early in the process. If you have suggestions, please share them with us (via website, email or phone – see contact information below).
  • What area will be served by the academy?
The academy’s attendance zone will include Floyd County, Polk County and Rome City school districts.
  • What is the tuition for the Northwest Georgia Charter Academy?
As a public charter school, the academy does not charge tuition.
  • What is a public charter school?
A public charter school is a public school of choice that operates under the terms of a charter, or contract, with an authorizer. In Georgia, public charter schools can be authorized by local districts or by the State Charter Schools Commission (SCSC) of Georgia. Public charter schools receive flexibility from certain state and local rules in exchange for a higher degree of accountability for raising student achievement, financial sustainability, and compliance. Charter schools are held accountable by their authorizer(s) for upholding the terms of their charter or contract.
  • What is the difference between a public charter school and a traditional public school?
Two words can help distinguish public charter schools from traditional public schools: autonomy and flexibility. Public charter schools are governed, not by a local board of education, but by an autonomous non-profit qualified board of directors, and they receive flexibility from certain state and local rules and regulations in exchange for a higher level of accountability. Public charter schools use this flexibility to implement innovative or unique programs, in order to provide educational options to parents and students that are not typically available in the traditional public schools.
  • What is the difference between a public charter school and a private school?
Public charter schools are public schools of choice. Unlike private schools, they receive public funding, cannot charge tuition, and are not allowed to have admissions criteria. Also unlike private schools, charter schools are subject to many of the same state regulations as traditional public schools and all federal regulations except Title XX. For example, public charter schools participate in the same statewide assessments and accountability measures as traditional public schools.
  • What is the enrollment process for a public charter school in Georgia?
The public charter school might serve a single school district or multiple school districts (defined as the attendance zone). If the number of applications from the attendance zone exceeds the number of seats available, the school is required to conduct a lottery. The lottery ensures random selection of students. In order to be considered for the lottery, the parents or guardians simply complete a pre-enrollment application with basic contact and student information (student name, grade level, age, address and contact information).
